What is "Pink Eye"?

"Pink Eye" is the commonly used name for Conjunctivitis, and is one of the most common
causes of a red, irritated eye. It is usually caused by a virus similar to the one that causes
the common cold; however, there are instances of
conjunctivitis that are bacterial in origin. For this
reason, it is not unusual to have the symptoms of a cold
before, during, and after a bout of conjunctivitis.

How is Conjunctivitis Treated?

Just like a common cold, viral infections like
conjunctivitis usually improve on their own, without
treatment. Frequently, eye drops are prescribed to ease
the symptoms.

Bacterial conjunctivitis requires treatment with antibiotic eye drops to cure it. For this
reason, it is important to seek the care of an eye doctor.

On the other hand, allergic conjunctivitis is in an allergic response to a substance (pollen,
cosmetics, etc.) and may be helped with the use of some antihistimine drops.

Is it contagious?

Viral infections are highly contagious. Just like the common cold, you can spread the
virus causing conjunctivitis by coughing or sneezing. Sharing items that touch the eye,
like makeup and towels, is another good way to spread the virus. Frequent hand washing
and avoiding rubbing the eyes are good ways to reduce the risk of spreading the virus.

Because conjunctivitis is so contagious, most schools insist that children be treated and
the condition clear before returning to school. Usually, the condition improves in a few
days, so time away from school or work due to conjunctivitis is usually minimal.

You should consult with our office if you have a red eye and experience blurred vision,
pain, discharge, or light sensitivity. In most cases if you wear contact lenses, it is
advisable to discontinue their use until the problem is diagnosed and resolved.
